Geek among geeks

September 10th, 2008 · by xJane · No Comments

After this post, I promise a moratorium on Wil Wheaton-related posts for at least two months. I finally got around to listening to his keynote for PAX, the Penny Arcade Expo. I do not read (or listen to) Penny Arcade, though I know people who do. Wheaton’s keynote, however, is essentially validation of the geek […]

Mobile Social Foundation

July 18th, 2008 · by xJane · 1 Comment

One of my sisters (#4) has been known to wax poetic about the fact that, in this current day and age, people are obsessed with themselves. Hence, “i-” products (iPod, iLife, iBrator, iWannaCookie, &c.). When I heard about Apple’s migration of .Mac to MobileMe, I couldn’t conceive of telling her (myname@me.com just sounds so pretentious). […]

Steve Jobs is the Anti-Buddha. Again.

June 9th, 2008 · by John · 2 Comments

Darn you, Steve Jobs, darn you and your cheap 3G iPhone to heck:

How can you say that you are Buddhist when you are so good at spawning desire and attachment in this world? Our only hope is that you will be crushed on stage by a giant iPhone.
xJane, I may have to stop […]

I’m Back.

April 21st, 2008 · by John · 1 Comment

Why?, originally uploaded by mind on fire.

I was at a training for work all last week. It took me the weekend to recover. I relaxed by skating, cooking, attending Wayzgoose with the kiddos, and installing three OSs on my trusty Macbook Pro.
Kudos to xJane for keeping things going!

Theology of Passwords

December 14th, 2007 · by xJane · 5 Comments

Continuing in our theme of technology & religion, this was driven home recently. At work, we have to have passwords that are exactly 8 digits long. At my old job, it was 6. The number doesn’t matter, it’s the exactness that drives me crazy. I can come up with a password that’s more than or […]

MySpace Transforms Ministries

December 8th, 2007 · by John · 1 Comment

The relationship between technology and religion fascinates me.  Here, a college ministry director for a Presbyterian Church in L.A. writes about the opportunities and challenges of youth ministry in a Facebook age:
Who hasn’t gone online and seen one of their student’s provocative profiles? This is a devastating blow to any youth worker, and a look […]

Feminist Tales from the Apple Store

October 20th, 2007 · by xJane · 2 Comments

I don’t feel that I’ve been pulling my (don’t joke about my!) weight recently, as the resident female, with regard to posts about feminism. So I thought i’d share a few tidbits from working in a technology store.

For Thine is the System and the Software and the Password Forever.

August 11th, 2007 · by John · 3 Comments

I only have a few minutes online–this week has been crazy with work, flying, driving, family reunions, conferences, etc. I’m even trying to fit in some “rest.” While it’s been difficult to be offline, it’s been wonderful to spend time with people I know primarily through blogging. You can skip straight down […]

I’ve Joined a Cult.

July 12th, 2007 · by John · 9 Comments

That’s The Cult of the Amateur, according to Andrew Keen. And he says that me and you and every other non-professional creating content on the Internet are responsible for “killing culture.” His book has made a bit of a splash (I haven’t read it yet, but I’ve listened to two NPR interviews), and […]
