October 1st, 2008 · by xJane · No Comments

From the “you have power over what you name” files comes this story of a woman who found out who she was in the process of naming herself.

the Pulpit Initiative—or, should churches maintain their tax exempt status?

September 29th, 2008 · by xJane · 3 Comments

So Freedom Sunday has come and gone. I didn’t hear anything on the news this morning about whether or not major changes are in the works, but I’d like to hear from the MoF crowd about this. Should churches be tax exempt or free to use their spiritual influence to exert political influence (and pay [...]

Post-Debate Thoughts

September 27th, 2008 · by xJane · 6 Comments

I’m so glad that McCain deigned to show up to his debate, although claiming to be too good for it? Classy. I TiVo’d the debate last night, so I’m only an hour and a half through it (only so much I can take…and after a beer it’s harder to focus on political punditry). My major [...]

Antichrist ’08

August 19th, 2008 · by xJane · 7 Comments

I enjoy Religion Clause, because it gives me bite-size news about religion & the government. More often than not, there is an article about the election. But this one just blew me away.

the Intersection of Politics & Religion

August 1st, 2008 · by xJane · 7 Comments

My father was recently interviewed again (mp3 link, will start playing as soon as it loads; somewhat confusing page it is hosted on here), promoting his position regarding a proposed ballot initiative in the State of Washington which concerns what he would call “Assisted Suicide” or “Right to Life” but which I would call “Death [...]

the Myth of “Third Party” Votes

July 28th, 2008 · by xJane · 7 Comments

As a voting member of a “third” party, I am often annoyed by the assumptions of non-third party voters. First, I’d like to take issue with “third”. In general, yes, this is a two-party system. But “Green” is not synonymous with “Third”. Especially since there are some really whacked-out “thirds” that deserve to be called [...]

Obama’s (Secret) Prayer

July 27th, 2008 · by xJane · 3 Comments

During Obama’s recent visit to the Western Wall in Jerusalem, according to tradition, he wrote a prayer on a piece of paper and left it there. However, since he is under media scrutiny right now, it was stolen by a young seminary student (who should have known better!). While I disagree completely with its theft, [...]

Spark: Google Stats

July 10th, 2008 · by xJane · 2 Comments

A legal team attempting to defend their client against (among other things) “obscenity” charges is trying to get Google to release certain stats about search terms in the area the trial is taking place. This is because part of the “obscenity” definition relies upon what “the average person, applying contemporary community standards” would find obscene. [...]

Female Bishops!

July 8th, 2008 · by xJane · 5 Comments

So…the Church of England has voted to allow female bishops. Which sounded awesome to me, despite the fact that those opposed to it have called those in favor of it “mean spirited” for disallowing “super bishops” (read: male bishops) for congregants that object to the authority of a female bishop. I’ll come back to that. [...]
