Spark: Women in the Box Office

July 20th, 2008 · by xJane · 2 Comments

“Could It Be? Did Hollywood Execs Get The Memo?” speculates on the reason for the number of movies-about-women (which seems to correspond with movies-by-women). I would take issue with her assertion that Mama Mia! or Kit are any great leaps forward for womankind, but I’ve not seen either, so I won’t get into that here.

This is What a Feminist Acts Like

July 19th, 2008 · by xJane · 10 Comments

I have to give props to my husband for recently committing unanticipated acts of feminism. At a recent party, a (male) acquaintance was drunkenly holding forth about how women fundamentally change when they have sex (presumably each time, given his justification) but men do not. Therefore, it is astronomically worse for a woman to cheat […]

Societal Norms & Sexual Experimentation

July 15th, 2008 · by xJane · 11 Comments

I Kissed a Girl (& I Liked It) is the title of the “#1 Pop Hit” of the summer. I even heard it on the radio the other day (although not before I heard the article).
This hits on something I’d been thinking of bringing up around here: the fact that female-on-female, shall we call it […]

Female Bishops!

July 8th, 2008 · by xJane · 5 Comments

So…the Church of England has voted to allow female bishops. Which sounded awesome to me, despite the fact that those opposed to it have called those in favor of it “mean spirited” for disallowing “super bishops” (read: male bishops) for congregants that object to the authority of a female bishop. I’ll come back to that.
So […]

I Heart Michelle Obama

June 18th, 2008 · by xJane · 4 Comments

Although Elizabeth Edwards is also teh awesome. However, she [Obama] has become the latest target in the media as an “agressive, outspoken, forceful” woman. Her rise to this prominence after Clinton’s exodus from the misogynist spotlight can be taken to be indicative of the fact that one of the major draws [for the media] of […]

Stupidity Kills, Too

June 7th, 2008 · by xJane · 5 Comments

Today is the anniversary of the Supreme Court decision Griswald v. Connecticut, which ruled that Americans have a right to privacy under the Constitution (based upon the fact that things like “unlawful search & seizure” violate your privacy). Specifically, that married couples could practice contraception in the privacy of their homes and the State (of […]
