How do you rate Obama’s First 100 Days?

Posted by John on April 29th, 2009 at 7:45 am · 5 Comments

Today Obama reaches that symbolic threshold of one hundred days in office. Although he’s disappointed me in a handful of specific policy decisions, I’m very impressed with both his concrete accomplishments and with tenor that his administration is setting. Diplomacy and the rule of law are back in vogue and he’s paying more than lip-service to transparency and accountability. He’s made progress towards increasing economic and social equality.

What do you all think? What do you see as his main successes and failures so far?

I’ve been pleased so far. He’s not as liberal as I’d like him to be but he seems to be doing a good job of bringing all parties to the table. And I certainly can’t argue with that.

I’ve also been saying for some time that the President should renew the fireside chats of yore. And again, I am pleased that he has. He is at least attempting to make he position more transparent. There have been some slip-ups but in general, I’m pleased. I will say this, though, that just about anyone would be better post-Bush.

I’m with you- Overall he’s done some amazing things, but I’ve been disappointed by some of his policies and decisions (like continuing the office of faith based initiatives, having Rick Warren invocate and “looking forward” so he doesn’t have to prosecute the previous administration).

I agree with xJane- not progressive enough, but compared with Bush, he’s very, very liberal!

I like a lot of stuff (like getting rid of the global gag rule, having HRC for secretary of state, the increased transparency), but I am very displeased that he doesn’t seem to want to prosecute for the torture that took place under Bush.

I’m much happier, though. I feel like I can breathe easier. And it’s a lot of fun to watch the conservatives pulling their hair out and raving like lunatics.

I think that it’s too early to really tell, but I agree with what has been said here. He’s not progressive enough for me (but no one who could be elected to President could be in the near future), the torture thing troubles me, but I can live with these compromises a whole lot easier. And I do think that we need to keep our expectations high, and not allow Obama to just do whatever because we’re so glad he’s not Bush. We still need to push Obama to do what’s right.
