While I was cleaning my office last night, I found a stack of TA evaluations from a comparative politics class I TA’d for in the mid-90s. It was a fun class–I gave the lectures on Japanese politics and ran every Friday as a monster discussion section (there were 100+ students). I kept all the evals that had written comments. Here are some representative remarks:

He is the finest grad. student lecturer that I have ever had.

He made up for a horrible instructor. If someone is to get tenure, please God do not let it be X. John Remy is the man for the job.

Nice guy–a little spineless and chessy [sic]. Will be a great politician. Could be a little better at control [sic] this rowdy group.

John seemed to take an interest in each individual student even though the class was numerous.

His lecture abilities were beyond his years. A+

Give John a real job and let him stop assisting. He’s what a teacher should be.

John was one of the best TA’s I have ever had. I work + go to school full time, so his accessibility viz the Internet was very helpful. He is also one of the most knowledgeable TA’s, and is able to communicate this knowledge effectively and concisely. This is the only TA I’ve ever had that I hope will consider taeaching @ the college level as a profession.

It was kind of bittersweet to run across this. I’ve given up on a traditional academic career, but haven’t given up on teaching and reaching others through my words. At any rate, it is nice to find this little reminder. I just need to make sure I use it as a carrot (a shredded carrot in carrot cake form) and not as a cudgel.

Aw, what sweet sentiments! And they don’t surprise me in the least…

Aw, how tender! They loved you! And we learn a lot from you here, too! You teach us here! (exclamation points totally earned)

I really miss teaching too – even if it was at BYU.

validation is always good to keep one on track when one falters. (I need more people to tell me I’m chessy, personally, although I’ve always thought of you as the height of chessiness.)

One of our professors shares excerpts from his evaluations with us, which is pretty awesome, since many of them are spot on (although one involved a “documentary on vampirism”, which made me wonder what channels that student gets…)

Those are awesome reviews. They remind me of what I loved about being a TA, and why I still think about going back to academia some day.

Thanks, everyone. It’s been a bit of a rough week, and your little kindnesses mean a lot. :)

    Love,
I’m sorry that it’s been such a hard week and I continue to ponder how I can ease some of your burden(s) and support you in pursuing your dreams.

You have been and always will be an amazing teacher…because of the way that you connect with people. That’s a gift that you will carry with you no matter where you pull your paycheck. I hope that seeing these evals and other reminders of your past experiences in academia can be validating and not something to beat yourself up about (with regret, etc).

Okay…finally getting around to my reader after three weeks…I have 38 posts of yours to get through! I save MoF for last ’cause it’s my favorite.

Fo shiz, you’re my favorite teacher.

John was one of MY students at the very university where he TAed.

(I am not the un-inspiring Political Sci prof John’s students spoke of ! )

Let me echo the reports of John’s students and say that some of my most memorable classes were the ones John took.

    Coincidence? I think not.

John decorated every class with cheerfulness, intelligent commentary, and deep sympathy for all expressed views––even those he disagreed with.

He has the soul of an educator––a very good educator at that.
