Music Monday: Indie Trios with Japanese Lead Singers.

Posted by John on November 24th, 2008 at 1:37 pm · 3 Comments

Because every day is Japanese pride day for me, I wanted to share two of my favorite pretentious indie rock bands with Japanese lead singers:

Band: Enon
Lead Singer: Yasuda Toko
Song: Mikazuki

Band: Blonde Redhead
Lead Singer: Makino Kazu
Song: Misery is Butterfly

I had a friend who was a blonde redhead…I like these, they’re not the kind of thing I usually listen to, but find I like when I’m exposed to it. Also, I think I played a DDR song called Misery is Butterfly. Or maybe that’s just how I felt after playing it…

    Awesome post.

Wow, I love the warbling tangibility of Misery is Butterfly. It reminds me of Portishead, Noe Venable, or the Cranes, and their website has oodles of style. I just hope they don’t have to drug up poor Kazu for every photo shoot to prove trendiness. The one of her dog peering through the plane window is awesome. I’ve got to find more of both to listen to.

Mikazuki is entrancing and deliciously deranged. I wish I could make out more of the lyrics, but I couldn’t find any online. Do you have any snippets from the chorus?

I can finally confess my being a fan of My Little Lover to someone who can understand! Admittedly it’s more less pretentious and a bit more candy superficial, but still, when I found them in ‘99 I decided many things Japanese were just going to be 90 times cooler than local.

Thanks to youtube I can list a few, the basic Sora no shite de:

They have a knack for eliciting a fairly hilarious freewheeling, 60’s-bright-color-clean surround-shopping sound as in My Painting:

    and Man and Woman:

I will never understand consumerism so well!
Stardust, high color 90’s visuals with a jaded dirge that has some nice moments, though it’s more for the vid:

My favorite is the embarrassingly poppy Destiny:

(What’s with the weird, old, and possibly remotely adorable white guy?!? Bah, I only just saw it as a video, the ancient green-screen Komputer is a lot more interesting.) Aishiteru-shiteru-shiteru….

Ah, maybe the old guy is Hal 9k’s adorable creator in an alternate aishiteru reality?

I miss 90’s colors. Your vids are so recent and hip they hardly have color in them, while MLL’s fare is obviously from a bygone era where turned the computer-color processing dial the other way– to enhance everything towards MORE TEAL.
