The 80s classic. Even my husband sings along to this one! But as were were jamming to it at a stoplight recently (I on air guitar, he on air drums, both of us singing at the top of our lungs), I realized that this song really freaked me out as a kid! Of course, if I’d seen the video for it, I don’t know what I would have done:

[aside: Billy Idol is totally the inspiration for Spike...]
I remember being petrified of being found pregnant (for lustful thoughts? I was really unclear on what might cause that, just that it was horrible)
Hey little sister, what have you done?
I was many people’s “little sister”, and resented their “looking out” for me almost as much as I was creeped out by Billy Idol’s coveting of his “little sister”
Hey little sister, who’s the only one?
I was quite distressed by the thought of being forced into marriage; all I knew about that came from stories & fairy tales. And forced marriages were often to old men or otherwise evil people
Hey little sister, shot gun!
The occasional minor key in this song made it impossible for me to overlook the lyrics and simply enjoy the song. It touched too close of a nerve
And there’s nothin’ sure in this world
Reminded me that I lived on the edge, not quite what I pretended to be
And there’s nothin’ pure in this world
I certainly wasn’t…

Heh. This was actually made fun of in one episode. Buffy is looking for Spike, and somebody asks if he’s the guy who dresses like Billy Idol. Buffy starts to explain something about, “No, Billy stole his look from Spike…” before catching herself.
(Okay, I thought it was funny….)
