It’s been a while since we had any tea-related postings although tea has been on my mind of late. My good friend, Onigiri, has taken to calling me a tea snob, which I readily admit to, but how did I get that way?
My step-mother-in-law got me into tea big time, while at the same time […]

Palin

I think that McCain’s choice of vice president is a misguided attempt to cash in on the presumed fact that Hillary supporters were only her supporters because she’s female, an attempt to get more credibility regarding ANWAR, and an attempt to show that the Republicans are just as progressive as the Democrats (”you’ve got a […]

Zombie Jesus
August 28th, 2008 · by xJane · 5 Comments
My cousin does a lot of babysitting. She recently babysat a kid who was trying to tell her about a friend’s imaginary friend, Genius, who was a reverse zombie: he died but then, instead of wanting to eat your brains, he wants us to eat his. It took my (Catholic) cousin a long time to […]

Moral Relativism
August 28th, 2008 · by xJane · 1 Comment
I was recently doing a survey recommended to me by BoingBoing. One of the questions involved a poor person giving money to a charity vs. a rich person giving the same amount of money to a charity. It reminded me of the parable of the widow’s mite.
Now, I have often been told, as a moral […]

Biden 2008?
August 27th, 2008 · by xJane · 11 Comments
I know very little about Joe Biden, but I have to say that what I’ve heard in the media recently has made me rethink my decision to break with my party and vote for Obama. Well, Biden and Obama’s recent lukewarming of his policies.
Surely anything is better than another 8 years of Republicans, but am […]

What is the Law?
August 26th, 2008 · by xJane · 1 Comment
I just started Law School (yesterday!) and one of the major focuses of the first classes in each course was this question. We were asked to define the law in our own words. What is the purpose of law? This question received answers like “civilizing of society”, “justice” (which was further defined as incorporating concepts […]

Over at Salon, for their series “Pinched: Tales from an Economic Downturn”, comes Our Cupboard Was Bare, an article that brings focus to the fellow Americans more adversely affected by the non-recession that we’re currently experiencing.

ERA
August 22nd, 2008 · by xJane · 4 Comments
I am obviously not an innocent bystander to the ERA debate, but I am impressed by how few people know about it.
Yesterday, I met a professor who, in giving us a brief biography, included the fact that she argued for “the original Equal Rights Amendment, which most of you have probably never heard of”. I […]

Spark: Gendered Robots
August 21st, 2008 · by xJane · 6 Comments
I haven’t yet seen WALL•E, but here is an article I found interesting discussing the genders of the two main robots. It is an interesting discussion of the perceived genders we apply to the characters based on our cultural assumptions. It is also interesting, however, how we can work beyond them.

What Kind of Person are You?
August 21st, 2008 · by xJane · 2 Comments
BoingBoing just turned me onto this quote from Maya Angelou:
[Y]ou can tell a lot about a person by the way he or she handles these three things: a rainy day, lost luggage, and tangled Christmas tree lights.
I’m definitely a 10/10 on the first…maybe a 2/10 and a 2/10, depending. So, not a great person, unless […]
