on Fox. I don’t know how long that link will work…there’s a YouTube of it somewhere, too, I may imbed it below a fold later when I find it.
This is my father, busy exploiting his illness for his life-long pet project: “the right to life”. Which I’ve learned translates into “the denial of rights”, “inadequate education”, and “my way is better than yours”. *sigh*

o.m.g. I detest that pundit so much I won’t even type her name here. Since I first heard her radio show (and I was still relatively conservative then) I found her snide and condescending. Part of it is her accent but most of it is her attitude, she drips holier-than-thou snottiness 95% of the time her mouth is open. “Holding back the tears” my arse.
She is a mean and vile woman.

That’s very intersting. I absolutely agree with him that if his life is still very meaningful because of his family, friends, church community, etc then he still has the right to life - but of course that doesn’t address those that don’t feel they have a meaningful life anymore due to their pain, suffering, loneliness, huge medical expenses to delay he inevitable, etc…..

I’m bothered that neither of them mentioned their individual commitments to Roman Catholicism, which I’m sure is a huge factor in their views on suicide.
Why is it that so much religious energy is devoted to the depriving of the choices, rights and privileges of others?

True, John. We seem compelled as humans to inflict rules on others. Maybe because of there’s a standard we can feel better about ourselves if we can reach the standard … and even more so if others cannot. Dysfunctional, no? I think we all fight this within ourselves in in varying degrees. Religion is an organized collective doing it.

sorry to hear your dad is taking advantage of his condition in a way less than ideal. I hope I don’t offend you by saying it is so annoying that someone who doesn’t suffer the same as another, (i.e. doesn’t experience pain, rather labored breathing) feels they understand how others do, and they have the right to say that everyone else should not have a choice in the matter. Sigh, I’m sure you have similar objections. Well, on the flip side of this, I just want to give you a big hug for all the pain and struggle you are going through with your dad’s illness. ::hug::

no, dylan, you’re absolutely correct. Mom & Dad keep saying that he would fall under the jurisdiction of the law, but nothing I’ve seen (certainly no loss of faculty, some pain, &c.) supports this.

[…] or “Right to Life” but which I would call “Death with Dignity”. I’ve previously discussed my feelings about my father politicizing his illness (and the fact that it drags into the media my personal pain as well as that of my family) but […]

Looks like that link is still active. Based on what she’s wearing in it, one of these clips of her actions off-air might come from the same day. Harry Shearer is compiling videos of television personalities and how they act off-air. I don’t know that this isn’t cherry-picked to show her in the worst sort of light, but her “Jesus God in Heaven” goes nicely with the constant gold cross she wears and “holding back tears”.
