I’ve been debating about sharing this link for the past week. It has nothing to do with religion or feminism or science fiction (though I’m sure if we worked hard enough we could make some kind of connection), but it is simultaneously the (hermaphroditic) Queen and King of the Internet Mashup,
If you haven’t seen this […]

LDS Church Handbook of Instructions available via WikiLeaks
May 28th, 2008 · by John · 19 Comments
This will be old news for Bloggernaccle Mormons, but a relatively recent edition (1999) of the influential but much obscured Church Handbook of Instructions is available online via wikileaks. I can only say to this, “Hooray Internets!”
I have to post the link on principle, if nothing else. Transparency and open communication are two […]
“We are so blogging this!”

(overheard between a drunken John & a drunken xJane at last night’s Abney Park concert)
Background: Yesterday, xJane was sitting around, slightly ill, and generally feeling sorry for herself. Whilst innocently watching Emmy consideration DVDs, she received a call from John, who asked if she was busy (she was not) and if she was interested in […]

The end of this article (around 4:00) makes me want to vote for Obama. This is exactly the kind of leader we need.

the Problem with “A”
May 22nd, 2008 · by xJane · 8 Comments
One of my coworkers, in whom I have found a kindred spirit (and who assures me that he is a lurker here), was telling me about his desire to create a space like MoF, where he can create a community that is not defined by what he does not believe in.
This sounds so like my […]

Bible in Public Schools Bill Approved Overwhelmingly by Tennessee Legislature
May 21st, 2008 · by John · 1 Comment

A proposal that would allow the state Department of Education to develop a curriculum for the academic study of the Bible in public schools has passed the House.
The legislation sponsored by Rep. Mark Maddox was approved […]

Also, if YouTube suddenly went down, 68% of worldwide blog content posted in 2008 would instantly evaporate.

One Particular Harbor

I grew up listening to music that was not what is generally considered age-appropriate. (Guy Lombardo, Tom Lehrer, Peter Paul & Mary, for example.) Jimmy Buffett was one of them. This song always makes me think of heaven. Not my heaven, perhaps, but it’s definitely his heaven. And it gets me every time I listen […]
Science Fiction & Religion
May 20th, 2008 · by xJane · 2 Comments
By now, many of you will have heard that one of the Vatican’s astronomers has indicated that there might be life on other planets. Even that they might be without sin. Many of my favorite science fiction books involve the intersection of religion and space travel (Dune and Ender’s Game chief among them). But really, […]

Melancholia’s 31 Flavors
May 20th, 2008 · by John · 13 Comments
Here’s a few:
Bipolar Disorder
Postnatal Depression
Depression with Psychotic Features
Dysthymia
I suspect that my favorite flavor is dysthymia, a sort of bland vanilla version of the depressive mood disorders. I like mine served up with a bit of insomnia, inability to concentrate, ongoing irritability, and a dull but persistent pessimism.
Why bring this up now? And in this venue? […]
