Why?, originally uploaded by mind on fire.
I was at a training for work all last week. It took me the weekend to recover. I relaxed by skating, cooking, attending Wayzgoose with the kiddos, and installing three OSs on my trusty Macbook Pro.
Kudos to xJane for keeping things going!

Two stories:
I recently helped a customer who kept calling me “honey”. Drove me crazy. First time he said it, I said, “Please don’t call me honey. My name is xJane.” He didn’t blink & did it again. The second time I dropped the “please” and the second sentence. The third time, I said it rather […]

Anyone else find it ironic that “women” are still referred to as “minorities”?
I visited Pepperdine last Friday and many professors, deans, and students spoke to me and my potential future classmates. I mention the particular school because I don’t know if this is representative of other law schools. I have often thought of the time […]

So…the pope’s in town. Or at least, in DC. And NPR is all abuzz with articles about it.
Among other things, he’s talking about the clergy sex-abuse scandals, which is only moderately interesting to me: it did not affect me personally (except to solidify the fact that I didn’t want to be a party to this […]

USC just sponsored a study of gender in movies, animation, and television, coming up with some pretty stark results: essentially, although the number of female characters has increased, most are still locked into gendered activities and are not often main characters. This can be seen quite clearly in Horton Hears a Who: there are many […]

A fantastic set of artistic works that capture, in a snapshot (I use the term loosely, more often in a 60′x40′ canvas) the kinds of things that get through out daily, weekly, every five minutes, &c. Many of these I would love to buy prints of (I especially like Paper Bags and Jet Trails).
Spark is […]

Yesterday was a red-letter day for flirt-with-the-geek-chick: I turned down two guys (one asked me to a D&D tournament, which was rather endearing, actually). But what really weirded me out was “You should check out our church!” This was, obviously, not a come-on…at least not a relationship come-on. I later told a co-worker, the only […]

Ironically, one of the few places in Mormondom where I still feel welcome is in the Mormon feminist blogspace. Three of them are listed in my sidebar under “Feminist.” One of my favorite sites, Zelophehad’s Daughters, is run by grad students (I feel a spiritual affinity to my favorite ZD blogger, Kiskilili, who studies Sumerian […]
