When we lived there, we had some new neighbors and the kids had been over there watching them move in. In a very un-PC way we questioned them, trying to find out what race the new neighbors were. They didn't understand what we were trying to ask. So we clarified, "do you think they are Samoan, or haole, or something else?" The kids said, without reservation, "oh, they are Japanese." Later it turned out they were white as white but were just coming over from Japan and had some Japanese-influenced furnishings and decorations!! I hate that kids have to grow up, and I hate what we do to them on the way. That’s what I loved about Hawaii.
