Leaving the Garden: C. L. Hanson’s Journey

For our latest installment of “Leaving the Garden” (a weekly series in which we ask someone to reflect on their encounters with religion and uncertainty) C. L. Hanson of the blog Letters from A Broad has graciously allowed us to share her post entitled How I Became an Atheist.   C. L. Hanson describes herself as [...]

Baptism

February 28th, 2008 · by xJane · 5 Comments

I think that the discussion over at Isaac’s post deserves another forum. I’m very interested in y’all’s experiences (hat-tip to my Southern linguistic roots) experiences with baptism. When you were welcomed into your (current or any number of former) church, what was the ritual of welcoming? What did you think about it? Did you stand [...]

The Ohio Debate

February 26th, 2008 · by John · 2 Comments

I’ve got readings, stories, and an application due, so of course I spent the first part of the evening watching the Democratic debate. All in all, I was very impressed with both candidates. Several of the questions were absolutely brutal. Consider this doozy that Tim Russert launched at Senator Clinton: On the issue of jobs, [...]

Atheism and Quaker Children

February 24th, 2008 · by John · 9 Comments

I taught the older kids’ Firstday School (aka Sunday School) at my Quaker meeting. The class consisted of me, my son (code named GameBoy), and my daughter (CatGirl). I took advantage of the situation and ditched my prepared lesson and began an informal discussion about our encounter thus far with Quakerism. We took turns going [...]

I’m a bit picky about memes, since I treat Mind on Fire as a topical blog, and not a personal one, but it’s hard for me to pass up this book-related blog meme from Zach (the coolest nontheist Quaker you’ll ever encounter, on line or off). Here are the rules; Pick up the nearest book [...]

This I Believe

February 21st, 2008 · by John · 5 Comments

This is my first post from our family’s cute little Asus Eee 2G Surf 7″ (Lush Green). It’s about the same shade as a pack of Wrigley’s Doublemint and weighs about the same (as one of the big packs). Its small size may save my back and kill my sight (and maybe my wrists). What [...]

Speculation on the Wisconsin Democratic Primary

February 19th, 2008 · by John · 4 Comments

This chart from American Research Group shows Obama siphoning off Clinton’s supporters.  In the space of three to four days, Clinton has lost her 6% lead and is now trailing by 10%.   I had expected Obama to cut into that lead, but not to completely reverse it.  What is going on in Wisconsin? I have [...]

Six More Words

February 18th, 2008 · by xJane · 4 Comments

We’ve covered ultra short SF stories. Now, to memoirs. The specific topic is green memoirs but I think any memoir will do. Mine: Courtyard: a communal herb garden. Gone.
