Here’s an interesting article from Pakistan’s Daily Times that explores the different experiences that Muslims have in the U.S. and Europe:
A recent Pew Forum study found Europe’s Muslims to be “markedly less well off than the general population, frustrated with economic opportunities and socially isolated,” while most American Muslims say that “their communities are excellent or good places” to live; 71 percent say they can succeed in the US if they work. Both income and college graduation levels match the national norms. 63 percent of American Muslims report no conflict between religious devotion and living in modern society.
The results of the underlying Pew study are worth reading: Muslims in America are much less likely to find religious violence (including suicide bombing) justifiable. Some of this satisfaction is linked to the higher economic bar for entry into the U.S.–our Muslim immigrants are wealthier overall than European ones. The article also sings high praises to the secular political institutions that allow for American religious pluralism. Almost makes me teary-eyed to be from the good ole U.S. of A.
