Insidious Effects

Ran across this the other day: a discussion of Hollywood sexism translated to the animal kingdom. Some interesting points that I’d not thought of before, especially since I enjoyed the Lion King thinking that the got at least some of the animal-gender-roles correct. This basically makes me want less to watch Bee Movie even less, but does give me some food for though about Antz and a Bug’s Life.

It’s amazing (and rather irritating) how much money is being spent marketing Bee movie.

I know this has been kicked around at length elsewhere, but it is also sad/interesting how in so many Disney cartoons, the mother figures are either completely absent or evil.

I find sexism at its worst in horror films. The female characters (protagonist or not) are typically bosomy, hysterical, stumbling, inept dolts, who never seem to have enough sense to properly finish off their evil assailants — one plunge of the knife, or one smack with a baseball bat, and they drop the weapon, turn away from the monster, and sob as the camera pans back showing him get up and come at her all over again.
