Imprecise Language: how I loathe it!

My husband’s parents are divorced & each remarried, which means that I have both a mother-in-law and a step-mother-in-law. I refered to them (when talking to other people) as such. I recently noticed, however, that I’ve stopped and both have become simply "mother-in-law", because often "step-mother-in-law" makes people ask questions that have nothing to do with the point I’m trying to make.
