Living in LA, by most counts a hotbed of liberalism, I often feel rather conservative. I’m married, heterosexual, and I’ve never been on TV, nor have I such a desire. But in the few days I spent this weekend in Oklahoma City, I feel very much the liberal.

For Thine is the System and the Software and the Password Forever.
August 11th, 2007 · by John · 3 Comments
I only have a few minutes online–this week has been crazy with work, flying, driving, family reunions, conferences, etc. I’m even trying to fit in some “rest.” While it’s been difficult to be offline, it’s been wonderful to spend time with people I know primarily through blogging. You can skip straight down […]

Why I Pretend to be a Pagan
August 9th, 2007 · by Miko · 2 Comments
I am an atheist. But I’m also a bit of a polytheist. If there is anything divine, I cannot believe that it is off somewhere, listening to my thoughts & judging my inactions, but that it is in the beauty around us; in my family & friends, in the wonders of a plane take-off, in […]

Wednesday Challenge: Meditations on a Lotus Blossom
August 8th, 2007 · by Miko · 5 Comments
I’d often heard that the lotus flower symbolizes the enlightenment of a human mind. The seed (a person), planted into the murky depths of mud and water (this world), after striving towards the light it can barely sense from the bottom (meditation, living life), blooms into a […]

On Fear.

My flight home from Salt Lake City was delayed by “computer problems.” We boarded almost an hour after the original departure time. As we bumped across the tarmac, the Captain tried to reassure us in his friendly Texas accent:

I’ve blogged before about my take on the democratic candidates and have essentially decided that I would vote for a Clinton/Obama ticket (although, in all honesty, I’m not sure what I’d think of an Obama/Clinton ticket…). However, recent articles and events have brought up a new candidate for me: Elizabeth Edwards.
John Edwards does not impress […]

insight from an odd source

I’m a pop music whore. Let’s just get that out there. I love Britney Spears (”Hit Me, Baby” is a classic, despite its obvious overtones), Madonna (anything by Madonna), and basically any boy band you can name (and some you probably can’t). So when I first started liking Nickelback, I was no more embarrassed than […]

Atheist “News” of the Week
August 6th, 2007 · by Miko · 1 Comment
Coming out of dinner last night, I saw a stand with The Onion on it. Not having read it in a while, I picked up an edition and laughed my way home (probably in danger of being hit by cars while reading). Among the headlines, “Activision Reports Sluggish Sales For Sousaphone Hero” and “Final Harry […]

Wednesday Challenge: Astrology
August 1st, 2007 · by Miko · No Comments
One of the oldest “sciences” in the world is astrology. It operates on the principle of “as above, so below”, which is to say that the movements of the heavens affect the movements of people here on earth. The majority of it is probably bunk, but sometimes it’s fun to read a horoscope and laugh […]
