Cozy Bedtime Reading.

I usually have to make a choice between blogging or doing something else. Here’s what I’m working on tonight:

  • Supporting Jana (her PhD comprehensive exams are tomorrow). I cooked up some Eggplant Parmigiana and creamy bell pepper penne (okay, TJ’s mixed the ingredients and packaged it up, I did the applied heat and arranged it all nicely on the dinner table). We’ve been watching the BBC production of Neil Gaiman’s Neverwhere at dinner all week long (unusual for us to watch anything at dinner, so it was a nice treat).
  • For the anthropology of religion geeks: I’m still wading through Catherine Bell’s Ritual Theory, Ritual Practice. It’s tough going, but I want to apply her work to my “The Ritual Lives of Mormon Men and Women” project.
  • For the IT geeks, I’m in the steep part of the learning curve for Ruby on Rails. I’ve got my stack of O’Reilly books and am wading through online documentation as I get ready to dive in. I’ve heard a lot of good things about how RoR cuts down on dev time (by an order of magnitude, some say), and I’m cautiously optimistic.

Well, off to squeeze in a bit more Ritual and Ruby before bed. If I’m good I can fit in a chapter of Bury the Chains before my eyelids get too droopy…

Let me know how Ruby on Rails goes (hopefully without boring the non-development community :). I’ve been doing a ton of development in php/mysql, and I’ve been curious about what it’s like to make the switch. I’ve also heard great stuff about it from the dev. community too.

Good luck with all that you have going on! Very productive time.

I love TJ’s prepared stuff. How long did it take you to blog the outline of everything you’re doing since you’re not blogging? ;) I just liked the dichotomy at the beginning of this post.
