Philosophy Quiz.

Posted by John on April 1st, 2007 at 7:34 am · 14 Comments

It’s only appropriate, after a baguette, some brie and a steaming caf?© au lait to spend the morning thinking philosophically. Here are my results from a quiz meme that I’m sure is taking the blogosphere by storm.

The first two are spot on. I was raised with a strong utilitarian bent, and my high school existentialist curriculum (for honors and AP English) probably had a more lasting impact on me than the authority/intuitive approach to truth that I gained from my long encounter with Mormonism (which I lost long before the encounter ended). My universe is stripped of purpose; my life has meaning because I choose to give it meaning.

I’m a little disturbed that hedonism ranks above justice, but after giving it some thought, it probably fits. I’m a moderate hedonist–I have no problem with anyone indulging the sensory pleasures of this life to the extent that their joy does not harm others (I also have paradoxic ascetic sensibilities). As far as justice is concerned, I believe that good should always be rewarded by good, but I strongly believe that violence should not be repaid with violence. This probably accounts for my lower rating.

As always, it’s fun to reflect, but you just can’t capture hundreds of years of careful philosophical nuance in a 5-minute quiz (or blog post).

You scored as Existentialism. Your life is guided by the concept of Existentialism:You choose the meaning and purpose of your life.

“Man is condemned to be free; because once thrown into the world, he is responsible for everything he does. It is up to you to give [life] a meaning.”

–Jean-Paul Sartre

‚ÄúIt is man’s natural sickness to believe that he possesses the Truth.‚Äù

–Blaise Pascal

    I got existentialism too:

I didn’t like the set of questions very much though — I don’t feel like the design allowed me to express my perspective…

    Here’s mine:
    Existentialism 95%
    Hedonism 80%
    Divine Command 75%
    Utilitarianism 60%
    Justice (Fairness) 60%
    Kantianism 60%
    Strong Egoism 35%
    Apathy 15%
    Nihilism 5%

Now I have to go and figure out what Kantianism implies! I think my Apathy and Nihilism qualities might vary quite a bit. When I am depressed, they are greatly elevated.

I’m distressed that “Divine Command” counts as a philosophy. It seems to me that it’s less a love of wisdom and more a love of authoritarianism (my dictionary says that it is a “study of the nature of knowledge, reality, and existence”; I can see how DC would be a theory, but not a study).

John, looks like your next book should be something by Sartre!

I find this so fascinating that everyone so far has scored highest in Existentialism. Does anyone have a guess for why?

I think my favorite questions were the Kantian ones. You just can’t disguise the language of “following a universal law.”

  • 8 Miko // Apr 2, 2007 at 11:40 am

There were a lot of questions that were, I suppose, technically “existential” which, I think, it would be hard to be against, like “Even if we never find out why we exist, we can choose to give our lives meaning.” I never actually agreed much with Kant…

Miko may have a point about questions that are hard to disagree with. But I think it also has to do with this blog itself, and the community it naturally attracts - “existentialist angst” is kinda what we do here, though more joyfully than the word “angst” usually implies.

I was pleased by the sharp distinction between existentialism and nihilism - far too often, I see them sopken of as if they were close kindred.

Sunflower: my sisters often equate my existentialism (which is apparently weaker than most MoFers) with nihilism. I think we’ve had this debate, but I don’t remember where, so I’ll just repeat my point (because I can): I find that belief in a God Who will judge all your actions to be fatalistic; my sisters find the belief that you are ultimately responsible to your own conscience to be fatalistic. I think nihilism comes under the same rubric.

  • 11 Jeff // Apr 4, 2007 at 6:49 am

I’m an existentialist as well, and late at joining the fray, I might add.

    Existentialism 90%
    Strong Egoism 75%
    Hedonism 75%
    Justice (Fairness) 70%
    Utilitarianism 65%
    Kantianism 35%
    Nihilism 15%
    Apathy 5%
    Divine Command 0%

I was a little surprised by the egoist part. I don’t necessarily see myself that way.
