I knew I had finally become a southern Californian a few months ago while driving. All of a sudden, stuff! was falling from the sky!! onto my car!!! After a brief moment of panic‚Äîwondering how my windshield, roof, and paint would survive‚ÄîI realized it was rain…
Today, in keeping with the fact that I follow the teachings of the Freman of Dune in my day-to-day-in-LA, I realized how true it was that there are “Four things [that] cannot be hidden‚Äîlove, smoke, a pillar of fire, and a man striding across the open bled.” I heard on the radio that part of Griffith Park was on fire and then turned a corner on the freeway and saw, instead of cloudless blue sky with brutal sun, a pillar of orange smoke with some steam rising in the distance. Now, sitting at home, I can smell a giant campfire.
It’s close enough that I feel that I should be evacuated, but also know what kind of a distruption that would be. I’ve always said LA was a city of fire. My husband thinks that’s because of all the fires…but it’s more than that. LA has an undercurrent of fire in everything it does.
I hope no one’s home is consumed, nor any of the animals at the zoo hurt. But the park has a considerable amount of brush and dead leaf litter lying about. It’s well due for a fire.

Hey Miko,
We are neighbors. *wave*
From what I hear, one fireman died and one of the buildings at Oakwood apartments might have burned for a time. (Hubby says he could see what looked like a building burning from his office).
The fire was started by two teens.
It was really hard to breathe in the smoke. We closed our doors and windows, and spent most of the day inside (although we did have to drive through the thick of it on the 134 earlier today), and all of us have scratchy throats.
It’s not good.
But, I’m sure the animals are OK at the zoo. They all have indoor facilities available.
I am just so bummed that a firefighter died. Just because two boys decided to mess around with matches.
Oh and about the rain - don’t worry, it was just a fluke

*wave* Sounds like you were much closer to it: I kept my windows open. It smelled pleasantly like camping, though the ash billowing about made me not want to go outside.

Here’s a blog from someone else who works from hubby’s building. This is how close we were. Crazy.

Tammy, does this mean you can join us on our occasional real life Mind on Fire field trips, pilgrimages or book groups?

Can’t make any promises, but I’m open to the idea

We can carpool!
Drove up Barham the other day: there’s totally a bald spot on the hill, now…
