Before doing a presentation on Bourdieu for my advisor, I asked Jana to talk to me a little about Bourdieu’s concept of habitus. In five minutes, she not only clarified the idea, she accomplished this task by situating Bourdieu in conversation with Althusser, Lacan, Foucault, Derrida and others. I was completely thralled–I know Jana’s smart, but I’ve never heard her string a bunch of key philosophers ideas together and synthesize them.
Intelligence is sexy, and my wife is hot.
I feel bad for giving everyone only a tiny glimpse of Bourdieu in Tuesday’s post, and that bit is completely out of context and viewed through the smoky mirror of my poor interpretation. To make up for it, here’s Bourdieu’s own words On Male Domination. It’s written for a wider audience, so should be somewhat accessible. Most of his Big Concepts are in there, packed into less than 1500 words.

You are much too kind…
In my opinion, theory is best when used sparingly.
Like lingerie, peut-etre?

Yay for men who think intelligent women are sexy!
I’m looking forward to following the link later this weekend when I have more time.

I agree, that is quite an impressive synthesis of philosophy! You are a lucky man!
