Happy Birthday, Jesus!

If he were alive today, he would be some 2006 years old! (give or take a few.) That’s a lot of candles.

Just out of curiosity, does anyone know if other religions specifically celebrate the birthday of their leaders? I checked Muhammad, Buddha and Krishna and couldn’t find any evidence (per Google) of birthday celebrations.

Hope everyone had a Merry Christmas, by the way. :-)

Elise, Buddha’s b-day is celebrated–a couple years back, there was a big festival at the Hsi Lai temple in Hacienda Heights. It was a fun event, and we’d love to go back if they hold it again this year and if you want to check it out.

The Prophet Muhammad’s birthday, Maulid, is celebrated by Shi’a Muslims. Wikipedia shows how the date moves from year to year (since the Islamic calendar is not in sync with the Western) but this year it’s pretty close to Jesus’ (from the LDS perspective).

What’s interesting to me is the differences in the starting points of the three calendars: I think the Jewish calendar measures the passage of years since the creation of the world, the Christian the time since the coming of Christ in the flesh, and the Islamic measures the time since the creation of the Muslim community (Umma) when Muhammad fled to Medina with his followers.

Ahhhhh. I finally got off my butt and looked through this blog after several months of procrastination.
There’s a lot of thought-provoking stuff here. You and your friends are quite articulate in your expressions and careful in your considerations. Journals like this make me feel as though my own journal is like a maddened dog barking senselessly at the moon, or an old man who mutters and grumbles in a language that he alone can understand. I will continue reading this.
I hope it would not be amiss to request that the Cthulhu Christmas CD be played at the gathering on Friday night.

Ah this picture invokes memories of a “Happy Birthday, Jesus” bash once thrown by a well-meaning ward.

for xmas, my cousin rec’d an inspired, homemade card. On the front of red card stock were three basically identical pictures of Jesus, each colored differently, a la Warhol, the final one with a party hat on. It said, “Happy Birthday to Me!” and on the inside, “Merry Christmas to You!”
