Best of 2006.

I’m burning in End of the Semester Paper Hell right now (Dante reserved this section for The Procrastinators), so my posts will be more of the link, quote and question type for the next little while. I’m glad that Miko has written a couple of thoughtful posts in the past few days.

Anyhow, I’ve learned that blogs can add to the information noise or help you to cut through it. I’ve discovered incredible people, blogs, books, ideas, graphic design, podcasts, musicians, etc., from my blog-reading, saving me all that trial-and-error anguish and lost time. Maybe I’m just trying to justify my blog-reading habit (I admit that I have a problem–I cannot quit at any time).

I am creating an open thread for you to submit your best blog finds in 2006. You can post as many things as you like, and the discovery can be anything from Barack Obama to New Order Mormonism to Dooce.com. The only requirement is that you have to include the permalink to the original blog post where you found your treasure.

I’m going to start with my best music find of 2006: Regina Spektor, on artist John Allison’s blog.

Okay, it’s your turn!

Thanks for introducing me to Regina Spektor a while back, John. “Begin to Hope” really is one of the year’s best.

I saw “the Pursuit of Happyness” on Friday night. It was my favorite movie this year.

Thanks, Julia–I added that site to my daily reads. Andrew, I’m glad to be of service! I’ve heard that Will Smith’s performance may be worthy of an Oscar–I’m looking forward to a little ‘happyness’ myself.

This post on dooce about her mole makes me tear up every time I read it (note: read all the way to the end of her long post). My apologies that this post isn’t really from 2006. But it has been one of the most influential on my own blogging this year–as I am trying to tell the hard truths of my own life.

Okay, another, lighter link that’s influenced the way I think
about ninjas and gives me lots of chuckles
when I’m up too late working on school stuff.

I’ve kept out of this for a while…there are very few places that maintain their quality over time. I’ve lost quite a few good blogs this year. My favorite (check it every morning) is Feministing. Someone already mentioned Dooce, which is also up there. Savage Chickens is a fun site that manages to be a blog and a cartoon all in one! WomenseNews has a section called Commentoon in which Ann Telneas gets her feminist on. Geekologie is a wikiblog that brings geekynews to new lows. And Mind on Fire’s not a bad place for a mash-up of feminism, mysticism, and Applephilia.
