Mind on Fire Book Group #2: The Winner Announced!

Posted by John on December 11th, 2006 at 5:19 am · 9 Comments

Apologies for the delay. The Remy family was booked yesterday, from 9am to 9pm. ‘Tis the season!

Once again, here are the candidates:

Excellent books, all, if the reviews are to be believed. One of the benefits of the nominating process is that it exposes us to intriguing potential reads. But you don’t want to hear that. You want to know the which one was the chosen of the masses (a mass of fourteen).

And the winner is…

Even though I didn’t vote for this book, I’m very excited to dive into it. I read Ehrman’s The New Testament: A Historical Introduction to the Early Christian Writings, and he helped me to love the New Testament again as an atheist.

I will wait a week or two before writing about this book, to give you all a chance to track it down (and to give me a chance to get through finals!) If you do write about it, please send me a link (’fierymind’ precedes the ‘at gmail.com’).

Thanks to all who participated in the nomination and voting process. I will try to make it a little less involved next time around. Perhaps two posts: one for nominations, one for voting.

In case anyone’s interested, you can see the final tally below. First choices received 3 pts each, second 2pts, and third 1 pt. Most of the ‘ballots’ came in through the voting post; others were received as comments on other posts and via email.

Misquoting Jesus 19
Open Christianity 15
American Gospel 12
American Theocracy 9

Oh yay! That was my top pick. I see it is also in the itunes store unabridged for $25.95. That might be my route.

I think this is going to be fascinating. And when we do the meet-up maybe we can do it at Starbuck’s and use video chat to link a few more cities into the OC group?

Anyone interested in a Seattle/Western Washington satellite group?

    I’ll be in SEA from Dec. 21 - Jan 5 or so…

Hah, I’ll be in SLC at the exact same time. Miko, next time you come to Seattle let’s hook-up.

I’m willing to experiment with a video chat session, especially if it would get you, Watt, and our other non-SoCal members involved. I think that we’re heavy on the Mac users on this end, if we want to go for an iChatAV session.

What would be really cool is if I could finagle UCI’s video conferencing room…

I’ll be in attendance in the flesh, but would love to join in the video chat with fellow MacBooker’s.

I’ll be in attendance in the flesh, the I’ll admit I’d rather be in on the video version from Seattle. You guys can meet at the REAL original Starbucks…..Watt, didn’t realize you were from that area but I love it up there. I grew up on the eastern side of the state in the Tri-Cities and spent many weekend roadtrips crossing the mountains to Seattle.

Just ordered the book yesterday and can’t wait to start.

Wow, seems like this is a haven for ex-Seattlites (I got teased about that in HS; my Aussie friend called me a Sattlite).

    Watt: hai!

I, too, plan to be attending in person but would be happy to bring a Mac and iSight. I think we max at four so if we have more than three ppl who want to attend, we’ll need a couple set up and daisy-chained.

Just ordered it on Amazon… This will be my vacation reading in Park City during the week following XMAS!
