I NetFlixed this out of curiosity and am totally hooked. Can’t wait for Season 2 (set for release on DVD Nov. 28)!
Joan of Arcadia is just what it sounds like: god appears to a 15 year old, Joan, on a regular basis. Instead of being in France in the early 15th century, we’re in California, […]

To those of you visiting from the Skeptic’s Circle, welcome!¬† On the surface, Mind on Fire is my personal blog, and charts my tortuous journey from Mormonism to unbelief; dig a little deeper and you find a community of believers who value doubt and skeptics who embrace spirituality.¬† I’m still on a pilgrimage to find […]

A Call for an Atheist-Believer Alliance.
October 11th, 2006 · by John · 7 Comments
One of the problems with controversial movements is that they tend to be defined by their enemies. By this I mean that the common perceptions are crafted by those who feel most threatened by these groups. Think of stereotypes of illegal aliens, feminists, gays, and devout Muslims in our society. This especially […]

Camp Jesus.

Cathleen Falsani, religion reporter for the Chicago Sun-Times (who lost the close vote to Sam Harris in our book group choice), blogs her reaction to seeing the movie Jesus Camp. If you check it out (which you should), keep in mind that Falsani is an Evangelical Christian.
I’m seriously considering seeing this movie in LA or […]

The Happy Atheist #1.
October 5th, 2006 · by John · 13 Comments

A week ago, we played the “Ah, Girl Mix” as we drove up to Quaker meeting. As we drove through downtown Santa Ana, Eminem’s rhythm and emotion filled the car. Underlying my silent meditation that morning was the pulsing conviction
of “Mosh.” It was as effective as any Tibetan singing bowl. Thanks are due to Watt […]

Patron Saint of Bloggers
October 4th, 2006 · by Miko · 8 Comments
As of yet, it does not appear that there is an official Patron Saint of Bloggers although many have been suggested: St. Augustine (patron of printers), St. Jerome (patron of letter-writers), & St. Hugh of Lincoln (patron of sick people & swans?!). Hinduism is widely used as an example of polytheistic religions: they have over […]

Meme: Five Things Feminism has Done for Me.
October 3rd, 2006 · by John · 4 Comments
I got tagged by reading The Happy Feminist:
Feminism has reinforced that women are not sexual objects, servants, martyrs, and has shown me how to recognize when women are being portrayed in these ways.
Feminism has helped me to realize that men can knit, hug, cry, talk about their relationships and their feelings.
Feminism has encouraged me to […]

Pardon the Pixelated Dust.

I’m currently engaged in a compulsive redesign, but I’ll continue to post around it. My apologies if you enter the site and it’s layout is reminiscent of Picasso or Dali. It will revert to its own sparse utilitarian self, though with less minimalism and more clutter (but hopefully with enhanced features and usability).
