I’m going to try to create links to these songs on Tuesday. Stay tuned!
1. Scarlet Ribbons (based on Harry Belafonte version)
2. She don’t Use Jelly (Ben Folds Five cover)
3. Spiderbite (The Flaming Lips)
4. Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots Pt. 1 (also by The Flaming Lips)
5. I am the Walrus (The Beatles)
6. Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds (The Beatles)
7. Fly Away (Lennie Kravitz)
I can’t get her to sing to any of my Bad Religion, Beastie Boys or feminist Grrrl Punk. I often get admonished by my children to “turn that noise down.” *sigh*

Thanks to your & E’s penchant for these songs, I now have them all memorized and can sing along (when I want to). My fav of the bunch is “Lucy in the Sky.” It just happened to play on my iTunes mix as E was doing her homework this afternoon and it was a delight to hear her singing along.

My youngest has me humming along to any number of Incubus songs lately, though I haven’t bothered to learn all the words. These days my daughter’s music influences me more than my generation’s music has influenced them. They tolerate Jethro Tull and Neil Young, but aren’t exactly fans. The generation-gap-bridgers have been Jimi Hendrix and U2, and U2’s concert last year was a fabulous father/daughter bonding experience (and an incredible show). I’ve never been a huge Beatles fan, but then who doesn’t know all the words to their music?
I’m also easing them into Opera, and so far they’ve really enjoyed it (my parents are huge opera fans and a lot of it rubbed off on me, when I wasn’t drowning it out with Hendrix or Led Zeppelin or Uriah Heep).
But you know you’re getting old when the car radio is mostly tuned to NPR and news usually takes precedence over music.

I’m looking forward to when our kids are older and start sharing with us their music preferences (E and I are exploring modern art together, and both kids recommend books to us now). At the moment, Jana and I are their musical windows to the world (and C’s cello teacher).
We have an Airport extreme with speakers attached and each member of the family has a personal iTunes set up to stream wirelessly to those speakers. We haven’t had music wars yet, but I predict in another year or two…
