Seven Board/Card Games My Son and I Play Together:

It’s late, and I’ve still got a hundred pages of reading to do for class tomorrow. If you check back in a day or two, I should have links for the games (and songs for the previous post).

  1. Memoir ‘44 Post D-Day WWII game. My strategy: to bore my son into a tearful retreat with a long historical lecture. He generally wins.
  2. Dungeoneer Pocket D&D.
  3. Brickquest D&D with Legos: geeky heavenly goodness really is more than the sum of its nerdy parts.
  4. Lord of the Rings A beautifully crafted cooperative game–a must have for Tolkien buffs.
  5. Betrayal at House on the Hill A clever, atmospheric game where you explore a haunted house until one player turns vampire/ werewolf/ Cthulhu/ Jason/ Blob/ *insert B-movie monster here* on the others. The game needs three players, so we can only play when a) we can recruit little sister, who will only play b) when the sun is high in the sky.
  6. Call of Cthulhu Collectible Card Game I think my son plays this just to humor me and my nostalgia for Lovecraft. I’m probably the only father that has read Lovecraft stories to his kids at bedtime (just a couple).
  7. Chess That gimmicky new game taking the nation by storm!

    I. WILL. NEVER. PLAY. BETRAYAL. AT. THE. HOUSE. ON . THE. HILL. (Even though i seem to be the only one in the house that can say it right.)

Unfortunately I don’t like games much. I can play on very special occasions (like when I have nothing else to do and I’m feeling really competitive).

There’s something about moving little plastic things around on a gameboard that’s an instant soporific for me. Ditto for card games (unless it’s solitaire and I’m on a plane or a train).

Dude, kindred spirit for sure! I’m the world’s biggest Lovecraft fan (my username on setiathome is “Yog Sothoth - The fun-guy from Yuggoth”).

“The cats of Ulthar”, “The Festival” and “The doom that came to Sarnath” were bedtime classics for my girls (stories meant to be read out loud)!

Ah–your inner geek shines through! I’m glad that I’m not alone in my madness. :)
My favorite animal is the octopus. There’s a black plush one in my office that we call the head of Cthulhu.

My kids liked the Cats of Ulthar story the best. A few stories I told in my own words instead of reading out loud. I’m going to have to break out some of these classics–it’s been a while!
