Mind on Fire is devoted to religion and skepticism, with frequent detours into science fiction, feminism, and other (mostly geeky) pet topics. It aims to be respectfully iconoclastic and thoroughly sacrilicious.

She comes from a predominately Catholic background but is currently exploring atheistic spirituality. -

Though I see no other posts at this time to respond to, as Senior Warden at St. Andrew’s, there ARE some things I believe I can say about this. I DO have an understanding of what has been going on anyway.
One of the poeple who attends church with us at St. Andrew’s works for a local radio station. He was drawn to make a “faux ad” by blending work and church, and came up with the “ad” that this thread is based on.
What Mike came up with left me in tears of laughter when I heard it, as we are noted for being “high church” in our area. The pictures Mike paints with his words are far from the liturgy one might see at St. Andrew’s…but not so far from our heart.
It turns out that although we are an Anglo-catholic parish, we have the nature of taking in whomever God may lead to our doors. But this is not a contradiction, for those who believe that the welcome of Christ was intended for all people.
However, for those who see the church as a bunch of self-righteous snobs, showing that there are at least some of us willing to take Christ seriously, while taking ourselves not so seriously, might be a good step in opening doors.
As I was taught, Christians are to be people of love. Unfortunately, many of us give people outside of our own circles, a far different message.
It is my hope and prayer that ALL people who share a Christian faith will welcome those who come to us in need of what our God has given.

Thank you, Harold, for the clarification! Though the post was brief, I tried to clarify things a bit by calling it a “mock” ad, and by including a link to a post that gave more info.
When I heard this ad and (after rolling with laughter) read about some of the background behind it, I was left with great respect for the folks at St. Andrews. I like to think of God as having a sense of humor and irony (for all His seriousness), and I like that many of His followers have the same.
I’m grateful that your congregation is so welcoming. I wish that more would follow the example of St. Andrew’s (and the Savior).
