I’ve got a Friend in Buffy.

I just realized that I’m hanging with a new crowd. These people are really important to me. As I spend more time with them, I find myself laughing when they laugh and crying when they cry. I can’t wait until I get to spend another 44 minutes with them again.

They’re an oddly named bunch of outcasts: Rupert, Tara, Xander, Spike, Willow, Anya, Dawn and Buffy.

Okay, so I’m a loser. I’m spending more time with the cast of Buffy: the Vampire Slayer than I am with anyone outside of my family and coworkers (though The Boy and The Girl and I now have a Sunday Afternoon Buffy Viewing Ritual–it usually involves fatty foods and occasional running into the hallway when things get too scary, like when Willow had to sing soprano in front of a large crowd in the first season). I just finished the fifth season and wept, complete with shuddering in-drawn breaths, as the final confrontation against the season’s Big Bad was brought to its bittersweet conclusion. This is from someone who A) doesn’t cry, except when slicing onions or zipping up too fast, and B) doesn’t watch TV unless they come on little shiny silver platters. Say it. I’m a loser.

But am I more of a loser because I watch Buffy, or because it took me so dang long to discover the Scoobies?

If I work at it, I can imagine that there might be people in the world who are losers because they love Buffy, but I don’t think I’ve ever met one. Some of the coolest people I know are Buffy devotees. So if I have to pick between whether you’re a loser because you watch Buffy or a loser because it took you so long to realize how thoroughly fabulous the show is, well, I have to go with the second option.

But hey, better late than never! I myself didn’t discover the show until its fifth season. But I tried to make up for lost time, and I’m currently preparing a paper on the depiction of sex in both Buffy and Angel. That might not make me cool, but it sure as hell doesn’t make me a loser.

Holly: I think what I meant to ask is “am I a loser because Buffy fills a void that other people fill with personal relationships (or maybe binge drinking).” At any rate, the fact that you, and Jana Riess, and my friends Amber and Meg and other definitely brilliant and creative types (who are more or less well-adjusted) love Buffy makes me feel like I’m in superior company.

Dave: Thanks for the kudos. The image is a composite of Hokusai’s “Great Wave off Kanagawa” and an engraving of the crucified Christ. I erased Fuji and filled the gap with the crucifix. All the same, I’ve never settled with this design, which is why it’s still so unpolished.

hehe, just stumbled upon this post. I discovered Buffy when it was in whoa syndication: some channel was running two eps a day. Which meant I had to rush home to watch the first one (which was recorded by TiVo) in time to watch the second one (which was not recorded by TiVo) because I was in denial about the fact that I wanted to watch it & refused to program TiVo to tape it…I’m thinking of going to Anime Expo this year as Fray.
